When I first started ballroom dance training, I knew I
needed proper shoes. Ballroom dance shoes have the suede sole that allows
proper movement across the floor, the flexible sole and arch area allowing
proper pointing of your toes to make a sleek leg line, and the padding
necessary to be able to dance for hours with comfort.

Ballroom dance shoes have the suede sole that allows proper movement across the floor, the flexible sole and arch area allowing proper pointing of your toes to make a sleek leg line, and the padding necessary to be able to dance for hours with comfort.
And then I started looking for ballroom dance shoes and latin dance shoes … and started seeing the prices! Ballroom dance shoes can be expensive! My first pair cost $150 for basic, almost boring, black (although they are comfortable, which is important). I realized these dance shoes probably would not last long given the amount of ballroom dancing I would be doing, and there was no way they would match the many different ballroom and latin dresses I wanted to wear. I started doing the math in my head and determined I would need a second job just to be able to afford shoes!
Ballroom dancing shoes have special construction. Traditional “special occasion” shoes are not the best choice when ballroom dancing. Rubber soles often stick on the floor, prohibiting turning or spinning movement of your foot, which can lead to hurt knees. Comfortable insoles will run the full length of the shoe to minimize impact. Soles will be made out of suede to provide enhanced movement across the dance floor. Shanks need to be strong, but the rest of the shoe needs to be flexible to give full range of movement. Aesthetically, shoes will come in a variety of colors and styles to match ballroom and latin dance attire. Any type of specialized shoe will have a higher price-tag attached, and ballroom dance shoes are no exception.
But this doesn’t mean they have to break the bank.
I quickly decided that I wanted the opportunity for ALL ballroom dancers to be able to purchase the shoes that will help them be better dancers, and make them affordable. So I researched vendors, and chose a small line of ballroom dance shoes (to begin with) that cost under $100, with most being able to custom order by size, heel height, and color.
That’s why we developed http://hitthegrounddancing.com/store/. A small selection of shoes is currently available, but new styles are added regularly. If you are interested in affordable quality ballroom dance shoes and latin dance shoes, visit http://hitthegrounddancing.com/store/.
